RJD Associates (North West) Limited have been appointed as subconsultant Principal Designer on the post-contract stage of a development project that involves the design and construction of a REEL Cinema at Nab Lane in Blackburn. The site of the works is located within Blackburn town centre and comprises an area of land between Nab Lane, Fielden Street, Barton Street and St Paul’s Avenue, which was previously occupied by Waves Leisure Centre until it was demolished between 2016-2017.
The new cinema building will be a two-storey structure, comprising an eight-screen cinema, two separate retail units, foyer/bar area, staff accommodation, toilet facilities, offices, lobbies and circulation areas at ground floor level, with the projection suite and plant room at first floor level, including an access route to the roof. The roof structure will be formed at two levels, with plant equipment installed on the higher level roof and access to the lower level roof via the higher level roof for maintenance and repair purposes only. Due to the sloping nature of the land within the site demise and undercroft area is proposed under the building, which will be used to form a car park. The works also include forming hard and soft landscaped areas, constructing foul and surface water drainage systems, installing mains services and constructing an electrical substation within the undercroft area.
Key health and safety considerations on this project include managing the overlap and associated interfaces between the construction site and adjacent occupied areas within the town centre, temporary works, contact with live services, groundworks and foundation construction, erecting the structural steel frame, restricted working space, preventing unauthorized access to the construction site, traffic management and managing the overlap with the End User fit-out works.
